    Ye Min Thwin Myanmar's military seized control of the country Monday, detaining the country's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and declaring a state of emergency. The military has claimed election fraud in the November vote, in which many members of its party lost. The coup ousted Suu Kyi and other members of her National League for Democracy party as the Parliament was poised to convene and form a new government. Instead, the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's military, announced it was taking over the country's government.

    Ye Min Thwin Fifteen people protested against the coup on Thursday morning in front of the medical university in Myanmar’s central city of Mandalay, in what appeared to be the first time that demonstrators have taken to the streets to resist the military regime since its power grab on Monday. Four people were detained, a witness told. They are Okkar Min, Min Nyi Nyi Kun, Ye Win Tun and Pyae Sone Aung.

    Ye Min Thwin Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Yangon to denounce this week’s coup and demand the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in the first such demonstration since the generals seized power. Saturday’s protest is the first sign of street unrest in a country with a history of bloody crackdowns on protesters. There were also anti-coup protests in Melbourne, Australia, and the Taiwanese capital Taipei on Saturday.
