Join MemoriesOne of the things I liked best about Millie, was the easy way in which she could convince me to do just about anything. She had been on the swim team during our freshman year. That next summer, she said, "Hey Marva, you should join the swim team, too." Though I had never even considered being on the swim team, I instantly found myself saying, "S...
Mary Buchanan Millie and Rod at their couple's shower. They hadn't had their own kids yet, but PJ made sure they knew they were ready!
I had the pleasure of being one of Ms.Hackworth's students in 2009-2010. As much as I tried, Chemistry was my weakest subject in high school. One day towards the end of the year Ms.Hackworth pulled me aside to acknowledge a major athletic accomplishment I had made, I was so surprised that she was even aware of the event, and deeply touched to know...

Sue Fox Millie decorated this corner to celebrate her neighborhood Drake grads. Yes -with everything on her plate Millie found the time to make life special for others - always. This corner has now been redecorated with an outpouring of love for Millie
Mary Buchanan
Millie was an inspiration to all of her students. The passion and fun she brought to teaching made any class with her an experience to look forward to. She was generous with her time, space, and energy in hosting the robotics club all the years I was there. You could always count on her for a laugh and maybe some leftover experiments to play with. ...
Mary Buchanan I was one of the few lucky folks that got to share a classroom with Millie. Her energy was silly, inspiring, and caring. I went by our room, 408 at Drake High today and found a touching memorial there set out by students. They loved her as she got the best out of them in her motherly way. Mary Buchanan
I am so shocked and saddened by this loss. Millie was the most incredible teacher I had in high school -- she made Chemistry so fun that I was shocked when I got to college and realized I didn't love the subject as much as I loved her passion for teaching it and her amazing labs that I helped her set up as a student assistant for a while. She was...
Millie was a devoted teacher at Redwood and Drake. In the over 20 years we worked together, I knew few other colleagues who enjoyed making learning some very challenging material such fun for her students. These chemistry students often played with the slime they made in her class all day and I frequently heard or smelled the results of her creati...
Intelligent, friendly, beautiful. That’s Millie.
Sorry for your loss in these already troubled times. Here’s to you and the kids to hopefully feel better and to live on
In the Nineties I was new to teaching. I was also nervous, awkward, and a bit lost. Millie helped to make me feel at home in this career. Here was a person who was incredibly smart and unquestionably dedicated--one of the hardest working teachers I’ve ever met. An educator’s educator. Millie was also someone who was friendly, compassionate, a ...
Lizzy McManus I learned a lot from Millies class. It was challenging. I’m sad to hear about her go, but her class was exciting and the labs were fun to do. I remember her toothpaste demo on the first day being cool to watch, on Halloween the exploding pumpkins were awesome. All of my older siblings had her too, there’s five of us, we’ll miss her. 🙂❤️
I'm so sad to hear of Millie's passing. She was my favorite teacher at any level, and I wish I could adequately express the positive impact she had on my life. I took Chem with her at Redwood in 1997/8, and TA'd for her the following year. She was the first teacher that ever had me truly engaged and enjoying difficult subject matter. My connect...
My mom, Beverly Rosenblatt, of blessed memory, was the attendance secretary at Drake approximately between 1998 and 2004. I'm sure that they knew each other. Rhonda Rosenblatt Rich Redwood, Class of '83
I took chem with Mrs. Milstead and it was a pretty challenging class. My friends and I bonded over trying to complete labs and the lab reports every week. I’m so sorry to the Milstead family. Sending lots of love to Mr. Milstead and their kids. 💚
I was incredibly shocked and heartbroken to learn that Mrs. Hackworth Milstead had passed so suddenly. She was my sophomore year science teacher at Redwood High School during the 2002-2003 school year. It’s been almost two decades, but I still clearly remember her as being a fantastic teacher. Her enthusiasm for teaching science left a life-long im...
I worked across the hall from Millie for 20 years in the Redwood HS Science Department. Millie was a light. She passionately gave her best to everything she did and touched many lives as a dedicated teacher, coach, and colleague. Millie is forever a part of our Redwood science family and we miss her deeply. My condolences, love, and support go ...
Ms. Hackworth was one of my favorite teachers at Redwood. I had the pleasure of taking honors chemistry with her during the 2010-2011 school year as a sophomore, igniting my love for chemistry early on in high school. She went above and beyond to help her students and engaged us with demos that stayed with me through college as I recreated many of ...
She was my class advisor, from 1996-2000!!! Gonna miss her!!!!!!
20 years ago Millie, Tom Lyons and I coached the best track and field team in the history of Marin County at Redwood High School.
Most of my memories during preschool were with the Milstead family and it was nothing but fun. Driving to school and hanging out with Tyler and will we’re the best times of pre school. Mille would always go out of here way to help and create more fun for us kids like when we went to redwood to see bubbles lit on fire. Mille was a incredible person ...
Teri Davies-Storm I have so many memories of spending time with Millie in High School. We were both on Swim Team and shared a love of God and the beach. One special memory is when Millie and I spent the night at her sister Cindy's apartment in Mission Beach. We had so much fun pretending we lived at the beach. We spent many days and nights at Millie's family home, where groups of friends would gather to swim, eat pizza, drink Pepsi, play pool and watch Saturday Night Live. She was so vibrant and fun to be around! One night she drove me home in her truck. The fog was so thick, we couldn't see 2 feet in front of us. Millie drove so fast, I thought I'd never make it home. Millie was always so confident! Millie and I bought a 2 for 1 memberships at Family Fitness (now 24 Hour Fitness) I still have mine for $5.00/month. We walked our Helix High School graduation together, followed by a graduation party with friends at Millie's family cabin. Millie will always remain dear to my heart and I will cherish my memories of times spent with her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends for peace, strength, and guidance.

Jordan Freeman Miss Milstead was a wonderful human who inspired everyone to be their best everyday. She made coming to school a joy everyday by being a student in her Chemistry class. She taught me and everyone I know, not only how to be a strong student but how to be a strong person. Jordy
Valerie Wynn Why a picture of baby Tyler? Because Millie gave me this mug to display in my DaVinci classroom. For the two years I had the pleasure of teaching Tyler in social studies, Millie would make sure I had a picture of young Tyler in my room. It was our personal "thing" and Millie's way of letting Tyler know she was there for him. Not only was Millie a teacher extraordinaire but I could see how she loved Tyler, Alden and Sydney unimaginably--sitting in her classroom she often shared stories with me of their successes, making me laugh with their youthful foibles, and giving me the lowdown on all things sports. She was dedicated to all beyond belief. How many 7th periods did I find Millie running to the vet to give the classroom bearded dragon its special medication? How many times did she give me pep talks in the hallway when as a relatively new teacher I needed a lift? How many snacks did she supply for every committee meeting? Her energy, enthusiasm, generosity, love of teaching, family and students will be deeply missed by me and legions of others. Dear Millie, your beauty will live on through Rod and your children, your beloved memory will not be forgotten.
I have such fond memories of Millie and the entire Milstead family as I was one of the teachers at San Anselmo Pre School and lucky enough to be a group teacher for Tyler, Alden and Sidney. One of my favorite memories was of Millie, pregnant with the twins, always coming in with a smile to either drop Tyler off for the day or at pickup time.........
Recalling Mrs. Milstead, a great number of things come to mind. Sitting down to list them all would be a fool’s errand, but there are certain qualities that stand out to me that define her character in my memories. She was a friend to all, both as a teacher and as a person. Her days were selfless; with nearly all hours chock full of teaching and he...
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Millie! I miss you every day - it's hard not having you in the classroom with me! Luckily, you left me all your amazing files so that I can keep learning from you. I'm sure you're keeping watch, but can I just comment on how wonderful your children are? They're strong, beautiful and resilient. You really did the mom th...
