Leo Vannoni Before the Mall Santa was born there was Jordan Marsh. My mother took Anna and I to see Santa at Jordan Marsh at Downtown Crossing one Saturday afternoon before Christmas. We got all dressed up, walked up to Dudley St. to catch the bus to the old Dudley Station (think Dracula's Dungeon) where we got on the T Orange line to go downtown. The orange line was elevated at the time so we had nice view of Boston as we went along. I remember my mother already had tickets. We went in and they had everything set up so you walked through the Enchanted Village first and Santa was at the end. You got in line and snaked your way through queue until we got to the front. (Santa was not visible at this point.. Then my mother made sure to tell Santa's helpers that we were together. Then they took me and Anna left to see Santa and my mother went right to where we would exit. All I remember next is this: I was scared. Look at my face. Does that look happy? Anna on the other hand took it all in stride, engaged with Santa and had a great time which was how she live her life and how we should remember her.

Gianna Staples Housemates in Corso Garibaldi, Perugia, in 1979. Anna had come from Boston and I had come from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. We met in the Corso Superiore in the Universita per Stranieri and the fun times began! We were sisters in all we did...and we studied sometimes.

Gianna Staples Anna's mum came to visit to check things out. When we accompanied her back to Fiumicino, she bought us first class tickets!

Lisa Girolimetti Anna with Lisa (niece). My maiden voyage to Italy alone, at 11 years old, to visit my incredibly cool Aunt who at the time was attending grad school at the American University in Perugia, Italy. So many fond memories to write about. 1. I landed in Rome and there was a bomb scare. They wouldn’t let Anna in to get me. My customs escort helped me find her. She was stuck to a glass window, pounding to get our attention. 2. The trip to her apartment in Perugia in a tiny Fiat with no radio. We sang for three hours. “Thank you for being a friend.” 3. The stop along the way for a sandwich. I didn’t like salami, but I didn’t want to disappoint her. I slowly ate the bread and decided to go for it. Salami in Italy was not salami in the States in 1979. This sandwich changed my life. And I’m 100 pounds heavier and happier for it. 4. I got to hang with her amazing roommate (Marg) and her sister (Sue?) and Gianna and other friends from around the world. If this is how big girls rolled, then college here I come. 5. The guy friends, Sandro & Gigi. SMH. More to come on those two hilarious gibronis later. 6. The professor she was dating at the time, the one who made fun of my Boston accent, didn’t last very long after my “talk” with Zia. Just say’n.

Jayne Bown Just a few photos of our trip to Sicily in November last year. Anna helped me make one of my dreams come true.

“Anna Mariaaaaaaaaaaaa” Anna was not a fan of her middle name as an addition to her first name. Not one bit. The imitation of her mother, Aldina, calling her by her full name was classic. Dear Zia, please notice I didn’t include Maria at the top of this page. I did think about it and then I saw your expression. You’re welcome and sorry Nona!

Jayne Bown Anna was part of the Brit's group and we were the "Four Brits and a Yank". Here are a few photos of our Xmas dinners over the last few years.

I had known Anna for over 25 years but probably due to the difference in age we were always at different points in our lives. A few years ago we met up again (I can't even remember why) and everything fell into place, and the friendship that grew will have a place in my heart forever. Anna was intelligent, funny, caring, beautiful, kind and an a...
